Taking good care of your teeth and gums is an important part of staying healthy. Not only can tooth decay and gum disease be painful , but it can lead to health problems throughout your body. That's why it's a good idea to pay attention to this in between dental visits. What follows are some effective ways to care for your teeth and gums.

The toothache is perhaps the most painful thing a person can endure. When you have a bad toothache you need to go to the dentist, but most of the time you won't be able to get an appointment right away. This is when you need to get some quick relief and there are some specific remedies you can use in these situations. Clove oil is just about the best known remedy for toothaches and it's easy to find both in pharmacies as well as in natural food stores. It's commonly in the same isle as Flotrol.

You can also use powdered cloves--just put a punch of them in the area that hurts.

Garlic is another toothache remedy, and is a natural antibiotic, which makes it good for treating infections. Placing crushed garlic on the affected area can reduce pain and inflammation until you can get to the dentist.

Everyone knows that brushing your teeth at least twice per day is essential for basic dental health and oral hygiene. Many people, however, don't brush in the best way, or for long enough. It's best to brush in a circular pattern, making sure to reach every area in your mouth.

It's highly important to use a clean toothbrush which means that you need to buy a new toothbrush every few weeks. If you don't already own and use an electric toothbrush, you should think about making the switch because this type of brush really is more efficient. It's not vital to your survival, but electric toothbrushes do the job far more quickly and thoroughly. No matter what kind of toothbrush you choose don't brush too vigorously because you could accidentally scratch your teeth.

When focusing on your dental health, you have to remember how important your gums are. Many people have gum disease and aren't even aware of it until it's at such an advanced stage that it's very painful. Regular visits to the dentist will alert you to such problems, and you should pay attention to any change in the color of your gums. If your gums are very red or sensitive, or if they bleed when you brush your teeth, there is some kind of problem.

Using a toothpaste that has tea tree oil in it is a great way to keep your gums healthy. Tea tree oil is a really powerful antibiotic that has lots of healing properties. Of course, do not use tea tree oil that hasn't been diluted in your mouth because it can cause irritations and it can be very harmful to your system if you swallow it. Keeping your gums and teeth healthy is pretty much a matter of just following some common sense directions. Most of these rules, like regular brushing and flossing, avoiding junk food, etc is stuff you already know about, but it is still important to remember to do them. The cleaner you help your mouth to be, the less likely it is going to be that you will have to deal with things like tooth decay, gum disease and the bacteria that causes them.
