Examining Magnetic Resonance Imaging Medical Testing Procedures

by Catherine Jones

Your doctor may schedule an MRI or magnetic resonance imaging medical testing procedure. This is a common diagnostic procedure that provides the doctor with a clear, three dimensional image of the human body. It provides a more detailed image than simple x-rays, and helps the doctor to understand and diagnose many health conditions. Here is additional information on the MRI.

If you are to have an MRI test, make sure than you understand all of the preparation instructions. If this is your first MRI procedure, learn as much as you can. Ask you doctor about what to expect and for any printed information that is available.

When you have an MRI test, you are placed in an area that is very confining. In fact, this can be uncomfortable for some people. If you have a fear of confinement, you may need to talk to your doctor about this test. Make sure that you tell yourself to relax, and remain calm. Keep your eyes shut the entire time. This will help to prevent panic.

Tell the doctor if you think you may have problems with an MRI. Your doctor may prescribe anti anxiety or relaxation medication. This test is done with powerful magnets so tell your doctor about tattoos or any type of metal that is in your body.

Before your MRI test, talk to the technician about your concerns. Many times, the technician can position you to make it feel less confining. For example, if you are having an MRI for your back, you may be able to lie with your head outside of the machine.

An MRI procedure is an important test to give the doctor an accurate view of your body. Remember to find out as much as possible about the procedure. Also, you must follow all medical testing instructions, to make the procedure more effective.
