Women's Health - Ensuring Healthy Vision
For women of all ages, maintaining healthy vision is more important than it would be for men, according to some specialists. In fact, a new report from the National Women's Health Resource Center: Women and Healthy Vision shows that women are at higher risk than men of having vision problems-including blindness-as they age. However, ladies, you can start as early as now and maintain the good health of your eyes. Try these tips.
Quit smoking NOW! Non-smokers are not as susceptible as smokers would be to the dangerous condition called age-related macular degeneration, or AMD for short. And AMD happens to be the most common cause of blindness for people over the age of 65. While there are some ways to slow its progression, there is no cure.
Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat when you're in the sun. This means wearing a pair of sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, both of which can help protect your eyes from hazardous ultraviolet rays and reduce exposure eighteen-fold as opposed to not wearing them. If you wear contacts, ask your eye care specialist about contact lenses with UV protection.
Lose weight if needed. Being overweight is a major risk factor for developing Type 2 diabetes. The most significant cause of blindness for women under 65, after all, is diabetic retinopathy. In addition, the Nurses' Health Study from Harvard Medical School found medically obese women were 36 percent more likely to develop cataracts.
Make fish a part of your weekly meal planner or take fish oil supplements every day. Going back to AMD, fish and other related foods contain omega-3 fatty acids that could minimize the chances of this condition. Conversely, limit the amount of vegetable oil in your diet.
Eat three or more servings of fruit a day. Another study showed that women who do this, as opposed to eating less than one and a half daily servings of fruit, are over a third less likely to develop AMD.
Hey Olive, eat your spinach! What Popeye didn't know was that spinach is a rich source of lutein and zea-xanthin, powerful antioxidants that can reduce the risk of certain eye diseases, like AMD. You may also want to increase your green veg intake (collards, kale, etc.), or eat more eggs and oranges to reduce chances of AMD.
Give your trusted eye care professional a visit at least once every two years for a thorough examination. Go more often if you have diabetes or any other eye-related condition.
Take a brisk walk daily. In one study, glaucoma patients who walked briskly four times per week for 40 minutes lowered the pressure within their eyes enough so they could stop taking their glaucoma medication.
Change your eye makeup two to four times a year. It becomes contaminated with bacteria and can infect your eye.
Remove your daily wear contact lenses before sleeping. You wouldn't want to wear them longer than prescribed, so follow instructions accordingly!
